How granular materials deform in quasistatic conditions

Based on numerical simulations of quasistatic deformation of model granular materials, two rheological regimes are distinguished, according to whether macroscopic strains merely reflect microscopic material strains within the grains in their contact regions (type I strains), or result from instabilities and contact network rearrangements at the microscopic level (type II strains). We discuss th...

DNA nanomechanics: how proteins deform the double helix.

It is a standard exercise in mechanical engineering to infer the external forces and torques on a body from a given static shape and known elastic properties. Here we apply this kind of analysis to distorted double-helical DNA in complexes with proteins: We extract the local mean forces and torques acting on each base pair of bound DNA from high-resolution complex structures. Our analysis relie...

Computing Deform Closure Grasps

In prior work, we extended the well-known form closure grasp framework for rigid parts to a class of deformable parts, modeled as frictionless polygons with a finite element mesh and given stiffness matrix. We define the D-space (deformationspace) of a part as the C-space of all its mesh nodes and deform closure in terms of the work needed to release the part from a set of finger contacts. In t...

F-regularity Does Not Deform

We show that the property of F-regularity does not deform, and thereby settle a longstanding open question in the theory of tight closure. Specifically, we construct a three dimensional N-graded domain R which is not F-regular (or even F-pure), but has a quotient R=tR which is F-regular. Examples are constructed over fields of characteristic p > 0, as well as over fields of characteristic zero.

Solid capillarity: when and how does surface tension deform soft solids?

Soft solids differ from stiff solids in an important way: their surface stresses can drive large deformations. Based on a topical workshop held in the Lorentz Center in Leiden, this Opinion highlights some recent advances in the growing field of solid capillarity and poses key questions for its advancement.
